The HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Card is now one of HDFC Bank’s best premium credit cards after Infinia. While the older Diners Club Black lost some value due to multiple devaluations, the Metal Edition improved the overall package with better milestone benefits and a higher SmartBuy rewards cap.

The card still offers strong travel and lifestyle benefits, including unlimited airport lounge access, accelerated rewards on SmartBuy, and good reward redemption options. For users who cannot get HDFC Bank Infinia Credit Card, the Diners Club Black Metal Edition is one of the best alternatives in the premium segment.

Here is a detailed review of the HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Card.

Fees and Welcome Benefits on DCB Metal Card

HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Card Welcome Benefits

The HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Card has fairly strict eligibility criteria. New applicants need a net monthly salary above ₹2.5 lakh or an annual income above ₹30 lakh for self-employed applicants.

Approval is usually easier for existing HDFC Bank customers. Users with an existing HDFC credit card limit of ₹5 lakh or more may have better chances of getting an upgrade to DCB Metal, especially with strong spending history.

The welcome benefits are activated after payment of the joining fee or after spending ₹1.5 lakh within the first 90 days of card issuance.

Card Acceptance

The DCB Metal has much better acceptance today than older Diners Club cards, but it still does not match Visa or Mastercard.

Online acceptance is generally very good across major websites, travel platforms, and apps. Offline acceptance is decent in metro cities and premium stores, mainly because of the Discover and RuPay partnerships. However, smaller merchants and some international outlets may still decline Diners Club cards.

CategoryAcceptance Level
NetworkDiners Club
Domestic PoS Acceptance (Metro & Tier 1 Cities)Very Good
Domestic PoS Acceptance (Tier 2 & Smaller Cities)Good
International AcceptanceModerate

The card works smoothly at most premium restaurants, malls, hotels, and airport outlets in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. Online transactions rarely fail now.

Internationally, acceptance is usually better in countries like Singapore, UAE, Thailand, Japan, and the US, especially at hotels, airports, and large retail chains. However, smaller merchants in Europe and some local stores abroad may still not accept Diners Club cards. Because of this, carrying a backup Visa or Mastercard is still recommended while travelling.

HDFC Bank Diners Club Metal Edition Rewards

The Diners Club Black Metal offers one of the best base reward rates among premium credit cards in India. We earn 5 Reward Points for every ₹150 spent on eligible retail transactions. Since 1 Reward Point can be worth up to ₹1 on select travel and SmartBuy redemptions, the effective reward rate comes to around 3.3%.

The card also offers accelerated rewards on categories like weekend dining and continues to reward insurance spends, which many premium cards no longer do.

CategoryRewards
Base Rewards5 RP per ₹150
Weekend Dining10 RP per ₹150
Insurance Transactions5 RP per ₹150
Grocery Transactions5 RP per ₹150

Reward Caps

CategoryCap
Total Reward Points per Statement Cycle75,000 RP
Weekend Dining1000 RP per day
Insurance Transactions5000 RP per calendar month
Grocery Transactions2000 RP per calendar month

The Diners Club Black Metal works best for lifestyle spending, travel bookings, and SmartBuy purchases. Insurance spends earning reward points is also a useful advantage, especially after several banks reduced rewards on such transactions.

Milestone Benefits

The DCB Metal becomes even more rewarding for high spenders because of its quarterly milestone benefit.

Cardholders get 10,000 bonus Reward Points on spending ₹4 lakh in a calendar quarter. Since 1 Reward Point can be worth up to ₹1 on select travel and SmartBuy redemptions, this milestone alone adds an extra reward rate of around 2.5%.

Milestone SpendBonus Benefit
₹4 lakh in a calendar quarter10,000 Bonus Reward Points

When combined with the regular 3.33% base rewards, the overall returns become excellent for users with high monthly spending. This is one of the strongest milestone benefits currently available on an HDFC Bank premium credit card. Even the Infinia misses out on this benefit!

HDFC SmartBuy Rewards on DCB Metal

The biggest reason many users still prefer the Diners Club Black Metal is the HDFC SmartBuy platform. Even after recent devaluations, DCB Metal remains one of the most rewarding premium credit cards for travel and online shopping.

Through SmartBuy, cardholders can earn up to 10X reward points on flights, hotels, vouchers, shopping, and partner brands. The higher accelerated rewards cap on DCB Metal is also a major upgrade over the older plastic Diners Club Black card.

The accelerated reward points cap is now 10,000 bonus Reward Points per calendar month and per day. The cap applies only to bonus points earned through SmartBuy and not to the normal base rewards.

SmartBuy CategoryRewardsApprox. Reward Rate

SmartBuy flights, hotels, and voucher purchases give the best value on DCB Metal. Hotel bookings through SmartBuy can easily return over 30% value if you redeem Reward Points smartly. But do compare flight and hotel prices on other platforms before you book them on SmartBuy.

Unlimited Airport Lounge Access

The DCB Metal offers unlimited domestic and international airport lounge access, which continues to be one of its biggest travel benefits.

Cardholders get complimentary access to 1,000+ airport lounges across India and worldwide through the Diners Club airport lounge program. Unlike many other premium cards, there is currently no fixed cap on the number of lounge visits. The credit card itself works as the lounge access card, so there is no separate Priority Pass membership to carry.

The benefit is also available for add-on cardholders, making it useful for families who travel frequently.

Lounge BenefitDetails
Domestic Lounge AccessUnlimited
International Lounge AccessUnlimited
Lounge Network1000+ Lounges Worldwide
Access MethodDirect access using the credit card
Separate Priority Pass RequiredNo
Add-on Card Lounge AccessYes

Lounge access works smoothly at most major airports in India, Singapore, Dubai, Bangkok, and other popular international transit hubs. However, acceptance can occasionally vary at smaller international airports because Diners Club lounge coverage depends on partner networks. Carrying a backup Visa Infinite or Priority Pass-enabled card is still a good idea while travelling internationally.

Other Charges and Benefits

Benefit / ChargeDetails
Forex Markup Fee2% + GST
Fuel Surcharge WaiverNot Available
Global Value Program1% cashback on international spends after registration

The 2% forex markup fee is lower than many premium credit cards, which makes DCB Metal fairly good for international spending. However, the real value comes after activating HDFC Bank’s Global Value Program.

Once enrolled, cardholders get 1% cashback on eligible international spends, which effectively reduces the forex cost further. For frequent international travellers, this makes the effective forex markup much more reasonable compared to what is advertised.

One disappointing change is the removal of the fuel surcharge waiver benefit on the Metal Edition. The older plastic Diners Club Black card offered this feature, but HDFC Bank removed it on DCB Metal.

Rewards Redemption

HDFC Diners Infinia and Diners Club Black Rewards Redemption

The Diners Club Black Metal offers one of the most flexible rewards programs among premium credit cards in India. Reward Points are valid for 3 years, and the best value comes from SmartBuy travel bookings or airline and hotel point transfers.

SmartBuy Flight & Hotel Redemptions

For most users, redeeming points for flights and hotels through SmartBuy gives the highest value.

Here, 1 Reward Point = ₹1. Cardholders can pay up to 70% of the booking value using Reward Points, while the remaining amount must be paid using the credit card. The remaining payment still earns reward points, which is a nice advantage for frequent travellers.

This is where DCB Metal delivers the best practical value. Frequent travellers can easily extract reward rates much higher than cashback cards.

Redemption FeatureDetails
Flight & Hotel Redemption Value1 RP = ₹1
Maximum Booking Value Payable via RP70%
Monthly Redemption Limit75,000 RP
Best Use CaseFlights & Hotel Bookings

Cashback & Voucher Redemptions

Cashback and voucher redemptions provide much lower value and are generally not the ideal way to use DCB Metal Reward Points.

Redemption OptionValue of 1 RP
SmartBuy Flights & Hotels₹1
Airline / Hotel Transfers0.5 to 1 Mile/Point
Gift Vouchers & Rewards Catalogue20p to 50p
Cashback30p

For example:

  • 1000 RP = ₹500 Amazon voucher
  • Cashback redemption gives only ₹300 for 1000 RP

This reduces the effective reward rate significantly compared to travel redemptions.

Airline & Hotel Transfer Partners

HDFC Bank Infinia and DCB Miles Transfer scaled

One of the biggest strengths of the Diners Club Black Metal is its large list of airline and hotel transfer partners.

HDFC Bank has expanded the transfer partner list significantly over the last two years. Some partners transfer at a 1:1 ratio, while others use a 2:1 conversion ratio.

Transfer PartnerTransfer Ratio (RP : Miles/Points)
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer1:1
Flying Blue1:1
AirAsia Rewards1:1
Finnair Plus1:1
IHG One Rewards1:1
Wyndham Rewards1:1
Radisson Rewards1:1
Air Canada Aeroplan2:1
Accor Live Limitless (ALL)2:1
Avianca LifeMiles2:1
British Airways Executive Club2:1
Etihad Guest2:1
Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles2:1
United MileagePlus2:1
Marriott Bonvoy2:1
Air India Maharaja Club2:1
Qatar Airways Avios2:1
Club ITC2:1

Singapore KrisFlyer, Flying Blue, Accor ALL, and Marriott Bonvoy are among the most useful transfer partners for Indian travellers. Accor transfers are especially valuable because hotel points have relatively stable redemption value.

One thing worth noting is that HDFC Bank frequently runs transfer bonus promotions for DCB Metal users. In recent campaigns, partners like Etihad Guest, British Airways, United MileagePlus, IHG, and Club ITC received up to 75% transfer bonuses.

Pros & Cons

  • Up to 10X rewards through SmartBuy
  • Unlimited domestic and international lounge access
  • Strong airline and hotel transfer partners
  • 1% cashback on forex spends via Global Value Program
  • Good milestone rewards for high spenders

  • Premium eligibility requirements

Final Thoughts

The HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Card remains one of the best premium credit cards in India for rewards and travel benefits.

A base reward rate of 3.33% on regular spends is already excellent. But the real value comes from SmartBuy accelerated rewards, strong airline and hotel transfer partners, and unlimited airport lounge access worldwide.

While Diners Club acceptance can still be inconsistent in some places, the overall rewards ecosystem easily makes up for it for most users. If you spend heavily on travel, shopping, and SmartBuy, DCB Metal can deliver outstanding long-term value.

For users who cannot get HDFC Bank Infinia Credit Card, the Diners Club Black Metal Edition is currently one of the strongest alternatives in HDFC Bank’s premium credit card lineup.

    Hi,
are all transactions considered towards quarterly milestone benefits ? Like fuel, income tax payments, insurance payments etc ? Thanks in advance !

  2. joining waive off if spend is 1.5lac in 90 days( current offer), will the wallet load be consider here if any one knows

  3. Hi,

Thank you for the review. You mentioned no reward points for rent payments. Will it be considered for milestone benefits?

  4. Hi. Had a query reg my DB metal card. If I spend 10 lakhs in one transaction, what will I get in terms of RP??

      1. Grey Pilgrim

        Hi Card Maven,

Thanks for all these articles. I have a couple of questions regarding the validity of my LTF DCB. It’s getting expired on July 2024. I would still like to continue with the ‘Plastic’ variant. However, I am bombarded by ‘upgrade’ requests both on my phone and on the net banking platform. Two questions
        1) Whether they would forcibly ask me to get a paid ‘Metal’ variant or would they continue to give me the “plastic’ variant (my preference)?
        2) My credit limit being northwards of 12 lakhs, would they offer me a paid FYF Infinia notwithstanding the fact that my spends were only in the vicinity of 3-4 lakhs over the last 8 months?
        Thanks in Advance,
        Grey Pilgrim.

        1. 1. You will get the same plastic on renewal too.
          2. No, you would need to have higher spends to get Infinia. The credit limit is ok.

  5. Hi,
Thanks for the update but I found the card to be a bit disappointment because:
    1. Loss of monthly and annual rewards on spend thresholds.
    2. Annual fee waiver is at 8L instead of 5L. Makes a difference if you spread spends on more than 1 card.
    3. Daily/ monthly limits are same plus Smartbuy multiplier is same
Card makes sense only if your quarterly spends are expected to exceed 4L. If one can get this more than once a year than it works better than the previous card. But again, most of us spread the spends over multiple cards.

  6. Just a crazy Q – Don’t you think with the bonus quarterly bonus rewards of 10k which adds up to 40k annually, DCB metal has added a notch higher than its big brother Infinia to become the best rewarding credit card?

    1. Yes, it is a good addition but Infinia has 5X on instant vouchers which is more valuable unless you only have non SmartBuy spends.

      1. True! I only use Infinia for instant vouchers. Basically use Diners for all regular transactions where the reward rate is same for Infinia or diners just to meet the quarter target.

  7. hi, update
did the process through the link…they kept extending the response time every 3 days,
i am guessing since my account is still showing the upgrade to dcb metal from dcb,
today they finally rejected it saying i do not meet their criteria,
i have 20L limit on their exisitng DB card which i have been holding for over 7 years,
a cibil over 790 and Imperia relationship,
this bank just amazes me every day

thanks for your articles buddy, i just thought i would update you

Should i even bother taking the DCB metal or just continue with the existing card?

      1. Yes , well exceed it,
They have given me their internal policy jargaon
Anyways what do you think I should do
Take the DCB Metal or stick with my dcb plastic
Or puruse the Infinia Metal after a few months?

          1. This request was for the Infinia Metal which got rejected by them,
DCB Metal is showing up as mentioned on an account level basis as an upgrade

I guess what you say makes sense, might as well wait a bit more and Re apply for the Infinia Metal rather than take the DCB Metal now

  8. Hi,
I have the DCB with a very high Credit limit [ can tell you this in a DM on twitter if need be], they offering me a upgrade to the metal one,
I am not finding it interesting enough, virtaully the same, what i am not liking is the 75k cap on reward redemptions through smartbuy per month remains,
and while they say the remaining tkt value earns 5x or 10x, its anyways capped to 2500 points

So i seek your advise, as you have been very helpful to me with your suggestions in the past

What to do..Upgrade to DCB Metal version?
Wait for that so called Galaxia [or what ever the gonna call that new premium card of their]
Or ask for Infinia [have one supplementary through my spouse]

I currently have the following which i regularly use , Infinia [add on with my spouse], Amex Plat charge, Axis Magnus [sadly got this just as they announced the devaluation, so will. close this card next year] and SBI Vistara Prime [on your suggestion]

    1. The SmartBuy cap is increased for the DCB Metal Edition. So, you will get 5X/10X up to 10K bonus RP.

If you have 10L limit, then would suggest you to ask for Infinia. There is no news on when the next super premium card may come. So may as well make the most of it while we wait for it.

      1. Hi Limit is 20L on DCB,
i guess will take your suggestion on Infinia,
        which would be faster,
Going through the Dumb RM or the Dumb Customer “Scare” executive….

          1. Thanks for the prompt reply,
Have done the needful through the link you suggested,
Tried informing the RM, he was clueless and started pitching me some Endowment plan [rolls eyes]

            Hoping this works,
            Keep up the good work

  9. annual subscription of marriot.amazon prime and swiggy on spending 8 lakhs in a year, is not mentioned any where in the website of hdfc bank. Kindly clarify.
